Water and Sustainable Development

Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
“Water and Sustainable Development” is an essential topic that intersects with the environmental, economic, and social pillars of sustainability. Sustainable water management is crucial for maintaining ecosystem health, supporting economic activities, and ensuring equitable access to clean water for all communities. The growing global demand for water, coupled with challenges like climate change, pollution, and inefficient use, places immense pressure on freshwater resources.
Achieving sustainable development requires integrated water resource management that balances the needs of agriculture, industry, and households while preserving water quality and availability for future generations. Key strategies include improving water-use efficiency, investing in infrastructure for water treatment and conservation, and fostering policies that promote equitable distribution of water resources. Furthermore, international collaboration and community-led initiatives play a vital role in addressing both local and global water challenges.
Efforts under frameworks such as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 6, “Clean Water and Sanitation,” reflect the global commitment to sustainable water management. These efforts highlight the need for universal access to clean water and sustainable sanitation practices by 2030. The path forward depends on innovative practices, stakeholder engagement, and policy frameworks that safeguard water resources, fostering a resilient and sustainable future.
This Special Issue on water and sustainable development focuses on the current state of knowledge locally and globally, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations to promote water sustainability for a future free of environmental pollution.
We welcome a range of submissions, including conceptual and empirical articles, reviews, critical commentaries, and meta-analyses. Manuscripts from various disciplines that address topics within this scope are encouraged.
