Special Issue Information

Universities exist to investigate undiscovered territory. Although their future cannot be foretold, they may have better resources at their disposal to deal with it. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly sparked new questions about the organization of the innovation ecosystems in the future, the connections among the major players in the industry, and the challenges that these players will face in quickly adopting new modes of operation related to digitalization and digital transformation (DT) and creating resilient organizations. While Industry 4.0 aims to use cyber-physical systems by improving the integration of information and communication technologies into production, automating processes, and introducing edge computing in an intelligent and distributed manner, Industry 5.0, also known as Society 5.0, seeks to address social issues with the help of the integration of physical and virtual spaces that would be made possible by Industry 4.0.

"Industry 5.0" and "Society 5.0" both represent significant changes in economies and societies toward a new paradigm that seeks to balance economic growth with the eradication of social and environmental problems as well as the difficulties presented by human-machine interactions and the synchronization of skills.
