Horticulture sector is an integral element of the nutritional and economic security for thousands of farmers in different parts of the world. Currently, fruit and vegetable industry offers huge opportunities for employment in terms of high-tech cultivation, crop diversification with sustainable use resources, food and nutritional security, steady and high incomes to the fruit and vegetable growers and earning of foreign currency through export of value-added products. A horti-business also develops a strategy and implements a plan of action in business relevant to floriculture and landscape. Three basic business strategies for Horti-business companies are low cost cum big volume distributor, Differentiation of products, Increase value for the consumers. Hitherto, the major objective of fruit and vegetable breeders has been to increase average productivity of fruits and vegetables by evolving superior cultivars. Recent developments like the rising demand from consumers for quality fruits, fierce competition in export trade and the emerging problems like natural resource degradation and climate change have necessitated a change in the conventional research approach. Adoption of hi-tech horticultural practices can revolutionize fruit production in the country. Although hi-tech practices are proven in increasing the yield and quality, they are cost prohibitive.

 

Thus, we are interested in the framework of horti-business and economics of horticulture and food with emphasis on areas such as Agri-products and services, Value chain and supply chain, Agribusiness and rural development, Information technology in agribusiness, R&D in agribusiness marketing, and risk management.

 

So, research articles, reviews and studies in this area of study are welcome. The Journal publishes high-quality original papers and review articles on issues relevant to food and horti- businesses with global and local perspectives in emerging economies in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

The effects of economic growth, energy consumption and financial development on CO2 emissions in Tunisia: ARDL bounds testing approach to cointegration

This study aims to investigate the impacts of economic growth, energy consumption, and financial development on carbon emissions within the framework of the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis for Tunisa from 1970 to 2018. The long-run relationship is examined by applying the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing procedure to cointegration and error correction analysis. The empirical findings show a positive monotonic relationship between real GDP and carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), which means that Tunisia has not yet reached the required level of per capita income to get an inverted U-shaped EKC. The results also reveal a positive impact on both the energy consumption and the financial development, suggesting that theses control variables lead to environmental damages by polluting the atmosphere in the long run. At the same time, the paper explores causal links between the variables by referring to the Toda and Yamamoto (1995) Causality Test, and it concludes that financial development and energy consumption play a vital role in the Tunisian economy to achieve sustainable environmental development. Therefore, policy makers should not only focus on economic development, but also undertake a solid green finance regulation to assume an active environmentally friendly processes, and the energy matrix should be transformed in favor of renewable energy to cope with environmental degradation and to ensure sustainable development in Tunisia.

Evaluating the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on Italian and regional agri-food systems: Case study in the Marche Region, Italy

The study intends to analyze the situation of the agri-food systems in Italy over a one-year period (2020–2021) of the pandemic caused by COVID-19, with a focus on the Marche Region in the North-Center of Italy. The study presents the economic situation prior to the pandemic (2019), with an analysis of quantitative and qualitative data on the most relevant sectors of the agri-food systems. The scope is to investigate, from a socio-economic dimension, the impacts on the agri-food sectors and estimate the alterations occurring in production and consumption during and after the Italian lockdown from March to April 2020. The analysis mainly compares the two-year momentum (2019–2021) of the demography of the agri-food companies and showcases current trends. This analysis of the Italian agri-food system demonstrates that the pandemic and the territorial restrictions severely affected the sectors and altered some of the usual market trends. The pandemic caused disruptions in the distribution of inputs, extension services, and cooperative services, also leading to a shortage of labour. Factors such as market accessibility, postharvest value addition, pricing, and product shortages played a crucial role in shaping the market supply during this period of upheaval. The findings obtained by this preliminary study could be important in supporting decision-makers and producers in shaping new policy strategies for possible future crises.
