Vibrational and Electronic Spectroscopy
Section Collection Information
Dear Colleagues,
Vibrational and Electronic Spectroscopy have been used in various fields because of The increasing demand for product quality improvement and production rationalization in the chemical, petrochemical, polymer, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, and agricultural industries that led to a significant renaissance of the vibrational spectroscopic techniques including absorption in the ultraviolet (UV), visible (Vis) and near (NIR)- and mid (MIR)-infrared regions, fluorescence in UV-Vis, and Raman scattering spectra.. These techniques provide characteristic fundamental vibrations that are used for the elucidation of molecular structure. NIR spectroscopy measures the broad overtone and combination bands of some of the fundamental vibrations (only the higher frequency modes) and is an excellent technique for rapid and accurate quantitation. This trend has partly led to the gradual substitution of time-consuming conservative analytical techniques (gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and mass spectroscopy (MS)) and nonspecific control procedures (temperature, pressure, pH, and dosing weight) by the more specific and environmentally compatible analytical tools of vibrational spectroscopy. One of the great advantages of these techniques is that virtually any sample in any state could be studied. Liquids, solutions, pastes, powders, films, fibers, gases, and surfaces can all be examined with a judicious choice of sampling technique. Also is a powerful technique useful for the physical characterization of pharmaceutical solids. When the structural characteristics of a solid perturb the pattern of vibrational motion for a given molecule, one can use these alterations as a means to study the solid-state chemistry of the system. FTIR spectra are often used to evaluate the type of polymorphism existing in a drug substance and can be very useful in studies of water contained within a hydrated species. Research articles and reviews in this area of study are welcome.
