Central South University, China
Professor Zhan is an associate professor and doctoral supervisor who has long been engaged in the theoretical and technological research of integrated forming and property manufacturing of large lightweight and high-strength components. He has led over 20 national and provincial-level scientific research projects, including the National 973 Program, major projects of the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, National Key R&D Programs, National Major Science and Technology Special Projects (the 04 Special), civil aircraft special projects, key and general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and key projects of the Hunan Provincial Natural Science Foundation. He has received numerous honors such as the First Prize of Hunan Provincial Technological Invention (ranked 1st), Second Prize of Hunan Provincial Patent (ranked 1st), Second Prize of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Science and Technology (ranked 1st), First Prize of the inaugural NFSOC Higher Education Teaching Achievement (ranked 1st), First Prize of Hunan Higher Education Teaching Achievement (ranked 6th), Second Prize of National Higher Education (Graduate) Teaching Achievement (ranked 8th), the 4th National Excellent Young Scientist Award in Nonferrous Metals, the 10th "Shangyin Outstanding Mechanical Doctoral Dissertation Award," Outstanding Doctoral/Master’s Thesis Supervisor of Hunan Province, the 2nd "Excellent Graduate Supervisor" of Hunan Province, Chen Xinmin Excellent Teacher Award, BYD Excellent Teacher, and Outstanding Communist Party Member of Central South University. He has published over 250 papers in authoritative domestic and international journals in the field of plastic forming such as IJP and JMPT, with more than 1,500 citations on Google Scholar and a single paper cited up to 250 times. He holds 70 authorized national patents, has authored one Chinese monograph and six chapters in Chinese and English monographs, delivered over ten invited reports at international conferences, and serves on the editorial boards of several international and domestic journals including the International Journal of Lightweight Materials and Manufacturing (IJLMM).
Supported continuously by national projects, Professor Zhan integrates multiple disciplines including mechanics, materials science, chemistry, physics, and mathematics to address the critical demands of China’s aerospace and related fields for two major categories of lightweight and high-strength materials—high-strength aluminum alloys and carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites—and their components such as stiffened panels and complex curved thin-walled parts. His research aims to achieve coordinated forming and property manufacturing of large, complex thin-walled materials and components. He has elucidated the fundamental laws governing extreme forming capabilities under various extraordinary manufacturing environments throughout the entire manufacturing process, as well as the cross-scale evolution of internal material microstructures and their effects on macroscopic service performance. He seeks mechanisms and manufacturing models that synergistically regulate precise forming and performance enhancement. His work has overcome a series of major technical challenges in manufacturing lightweight, high-strength materials and components for aerospace applications, resulting in multiple innovative research achievements and core technologies that have made significant contributions to aerospace and weaponry manufacturing.
