Dr Quanshun Luo's research interests are in broad areas of materials science and engineering with expertise in characterization of materials and surfaces using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and related X-ray/electron spectroscopic techniques. Most of his research has been in metallurgy, manufacturing industry, surface engineering technologies and tribology, with more than 100 research publications. Recently his research involves metallic materials of medical implants.

- The research in ultrahigh strength steel (TSB Smart Award) was highly recognised by TSB (Innovate UK) with a video film produced after the project. The project is also recognised by ACES as a successful industrial R&D project, with posters displayed in ACES and MERI lab;

- Advanced Steels
- Through developing novel heat treatments, the strength and toughness properties can be further improved as compared to the conventional quenching-tempering (Q-T) and lower-bainite austempering treatments. Ultrahigh strength spring/structural steels for automotive/aerospace industries;
- Being sponsored by Innovate-UK and industry, two novel treatments have been developed, including quenching and double tempering (Q-T-T) treatment and partial austempering treatment, which are used to manufacture ultrahigh strength spring steel (torsion bars of large vehicles) and wear resistant steel (metal-cutting shear blades);
- Austenitic stainless steels for medical applications (Sheffield Children Hospital, Swan Morton);
- Fundamental study on the carbon partitioning behaviour in the decomposition of under-cooled austenite.
- Nano-structured coatings and surface treatments
- Collaborations with Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guangdong University of Technology, to study the friction and wear properties, microstructure, and wear mechanisms of nanocomposite superhard coatings fabricated by plasma-enhanced PVD;
- Plasma nitriding of austenitic stainless steels for combined corrosion resistance and wear resistance, collaboration with Miba Coatings Group;
- Advanced characterization of nano-scale domains.
- Industrial consultancy
- Developing research and consultancy collaboration to support regional industry, including the delivery of government-funded projects such as Sheffield Innovation Project (SIP), Innovation Future;
- Failure investigations of industrial materials, including fatigue and fracture, wear and friction, metallurgical defects and their prevention;
- Materials analyses and testing by means of SEM, XRD, TEM, macro/micro hardness, tribo-tests, etc., including high-precision residual stress measurement.

- Skills in the operation and data interpretation of various materials characterization techniques, including analytical SEM, analytical TEM (SAD, EDX and EELS), XRD, 3D microscopy (IFM);
- Advanced quantitative XRD, including a novel numerical peak-fitting method for comprehensive crystallographic analyses of hardened steels and the analysis of nano-clusters
- Development of cross-sectional TEM sample preparation for nano-scale surface analysis, e.g. thin films and coatings, nano-scale tribofilms, etc.
