Dr Sumelka is currently a Professor at the Institute of Structural Engineering (ISE) of Poznan University of Technology (PUT). His main fields of interest are constitutive modelling, non-local models, extreme dynamics, damage mechanics and more general theoretical mechanics. In 2009 he received Dr. Eng. degree in the field mechanics. In 2014 he received Dr. Habil. Eng. degree in the field of non-local mechanics of materials. Author and co-author of 40+ papers in scientific journals, 1 monograph, 8+ chapters in monographs, more than 80+ conference proceedings, and co-Editor of 3 conference books of abstracts. Since 2016 he is a Head of Division of Computer Aided Design of PUT, and Deputy Director for Science (ISE).

Dr Sumelka is an active member of Section of Mechanics of Structures and Materials (Polish Academy of Science - PAS), Polish Association for Computational Mechanics (PACM), Polish Association for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (PATAM) and Scientific Committee for Mechanics and Structural Engineering (PAS). He received many awards including: individual scientific award of the PATAM (named Prof. Wacław Olszak) in 2015, a scholarship funded by Polish Ministry of Science 2014-2017, individual award of the PUT Rector, for scientific research in 2009; individual award of the PAS, named Prof. Michal Zyczkowski, for scientific research in 2009; award of the PACM for the best paper presented by a young researcher during CMM-2007; team award of the Poznan University of Technology Rector, for scientific research in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016.
