Abstract

Cotton fiber constitutes the raw material for textile and clothing industry. This study shown the determine effect of certain flower morphological characters of cotton genotypes on cotton fiber traits. In this experimental used RCBD design with three replications for each sample. In the study, a total of 30 cotton (G. barbadense L. and G. hirsutum L.) genotypes, were used as plant material. As our results, a positive correlation was determined between the fiber length and anther size (r = + 0.33), and stylus length (r = + 0.73), likewise a positive correlation between the fiber fineness and the distance from the upmost anthers to stigma (r = 0.22), and anther size (r = 0.26). Besides a negative correlation was obtained between the stylus thickness (r = - 0.18) and the ovarium width (r = - 0.18). As our results, since the anther size, stylus thickness, pollen size increase are the traits facilitating pollens’ reaching the stigma top and germinating and reaching the ovarium, positively influencing the fertilization.
